Which battery types are best for small outdoor solar setups?

Selecting battery chemistry for compact outdoor solar systems

For small solar setups, battery choice affects lifespan, weight, maintenance, and cost. The main options are lead-acid (including AGM and gel) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4).

Battery comparisons:

  • Lead-acid (AGM/Gel): lower upfront cost, heavier, shorter cycle life, require ventilation for some types
  • LiFePO4: higher upfront cost, lighter, much longer cycle life, can be discharged deeper, compact and maintenance-free

LiFePO4 is increasingly common for patio and balcony systems because of its durability and compact size. If budget constraints are tight and loads are minimal, sealed AGM batteries can work but expect more frequent replacement. Always match battery voltage to your charge controller and inverter and include a battery management system if using lithium cells.
